It wasn’t a big crowd but it was organised at short notice after the bad news on Thursday that Asia Bibi’s appeal against the death sentence for blasphemy had been dismissed in Pakistan. But what it lacked in numbers it made up for in energy, tunefulness and suggestions for practical action by the public. Other Christians joined the BPCA, including a family from Christian Voice.

The Chairman of BPCA, Wilson Chowdry was speaking as I arrived. He explained to the passing crowds what Mrs Bibi had done to merit the death sentence. That she had given water to other workers in the fields. They were Muslim women who accused her of polluting their water. They berated her for her Christian faith, which she defended, telling them, “Jesus Christ died for me, what did your Mohammed ever do for you?” She was arrested, tried and sentenced to death. She has been held in prison for five years during which time she has been beaten, raped and attempts made to kill her ahead of the sentence. In 2011 the Govenor of the Punjab, Salman Taseer said she should be pardoned; he was murdered by his own bodyguard who was quite open about his motives. Two months later the Minister for Minorities in Pakistan, Shahbaz Bhatti, also a Christian, publicly defended her and was also murdered.
Mr Chowdry called upon David Cameron to take a strong stance over Pakistan’s human rights record. He urged the passing members of the public to lobby their MPs and MEPs. He reminded us of the Billions of pounds of taxpayers money given to Pakistan in aid. he urged that this be curtailed or even stopped until Pakistan stops these abuses of human rights and ceases persecution of Christians, Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists and all other minorities.
